Too small and your stage looks cramped and the sound doesn't reach the back. Too big and you've paid for kit you didn't need. Here are the questions we ask to get it right.

Sizing the stage

  • Speeches and awards: enough room for a lectern, a host and a few people collecting awards. A low riser is often plenty.
  • Bands: think about the drum riser, amps, monitors and room to move. A full band usually needs a stage around 6m wide or more.
  • Fashion shows: a catwalk long enough for the walk, with a turn at the end and a clear route backstage.
  • Height: the bigger the standing crowd, the higher the stage needs to be for people to see over heads.

Sizing the PA

  • Speech only: a compact two-speaker system covers most meeting rooms and dinners.
  • Music and dancing: add subs for depth.
  • Live bands: a bigger PA plus stage monitors so the band can hear themselves.
  • Outdoors: line-array PA throws sound further and more evenly across a crowd.

Don't forget

  • Power: where it comes from and how much there is
  • Access: doors, stairs and parking for the van
  • Sightlines: screens either side for big rooms and crowds
